Amalia Starr is on a mission to tell the story of people who live in the shadows. Her new book, Raising Brandon, is an autobiographical account of her struggle to raise a son in a world where autism was not understood.
The book follows Starr’s life from the birth of her youngest son, his diagnosis with autism, epilepsy, and learning disorders, and her goal to help him live independently. “When most people hear autism they associate it with a child,” says Starr. “But like Brandon, my son who is now thirty-six, our children grow up, and we want them to live well and learn how to survive in the world.”
“There are thousands of children being diagnosed with autism everyday and those children will grow up. We need to have the resources in place to help them, and as parents, we need to know what to do.”
'It is one of the most beautiful compensations in life…that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.'
—Ralph Waldo Emerson
Today, I am independent too. My life has completely changed. I would never have thought that by helping my son I would be helping myself at the same time.
I feel fortunate to have time to share my 36 years of experience with parents and professionals through private consultations, workshops, training sessions, presentations, and my new book, Raising Brandon. My goal is to bring hope, solutions, answers and emotional relief to parents who have children with "disabilities", and to share with professionals my firsthand experience of raising a child with autism & special needs. Hopefully this will provide a better understanding on how to work with parents to achieve the best results for their special needs child and the entire family.”
